Companies in the petrochemical industry manage the operations and processes that transform crude oil and other raw materials into chemical products. There are two major categories of petrochemical companies:
  • companies that refine oil and other raw materials and convert them into basic chemicals such as ethylene; and
  • companies that use these basic chemicals to create materials that can then be used in other industries to produce finished products, such as plastics, detergents, paints, fertilizers, polyester, etc.

Refining and transforming chemical elements into finished products are both complex processes that involve the following challenges for the petrochemical manufacturing industry:
  • creating and maintaining formulas and recipes to measure and combine ingredients, and to avoid dangerous chemical reactions;
  • defining efficient workflows that also take safety regulations into account;
  • managing fixed assets to track acquisitions, depreciations, and changes in equipment usage, which can be complex due to the sheer quantity of tools needed and the advanced technology required to use them; and
  • defining and tracking cost management of finished products, particularly since different types of chemical elements are used, in different combinations, with different units of measure.
Petrochemical companies can overcome these challenges with software solutions such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems for process or mixed-mode manufacturing, and product life cycle management (PLM) applications.
